Lesson Plan:  "Experiencing the Civil War" Learning Centers

 

Students accessing the National Geographic Website to complete an activity simulating a trip on the Underground Railroad

Unit:  Michigan and the Civil War

Subject: Social Studies

Grade: fourth

Summary:  Students will review and discover new information about the Civil War by visiting hands-on learning centers incorporating multiple intelligences.

Prior Knowledge Needed:  Students should have a concrete understanding of the Civil War

 

Materials: Computer, Card Match Game sets with vocabulary words and definitions (teacher made), Blank U.S. maps, Worksheet: Civil War Timeline, Worksheet: A Divided Nation, Crayons, Civil War Math Sheet, calculators

 

Objectives:  Students will:

 

Michigan Standards and Benchmarks:

I.1  “All students will sequence chronologically the following eras of American history and key events within these eras in order to examine relationships and to explain cause and effect:…Civil War and Reconstruction (1850-1877)…”

V.1  “All students will acquire information from books, maps, newspapers, data sets and other sources, organize and present the information in maps, graphs, charts and timelines, interpret the meaning and significance of information, and use a variety of electronic technologies to assist in accessing and managing information.”

 

Procedure:

1.1.  Anticipatory Set:  Review previous learning.  Explain to students that today they are going to have learning centers to help reinforce what they have learned and also gain more insight into this unit.

2.  2.Guided Practice:  Explain each center to students, giving examples where necessary

3.  3.Independent Practice:  Students complete each center, rotating every 20-30 minutes.

 

Centers:

¨1. National Geographic Website virtual trip on the Underground Railroad.  Center will need computers with internet Access

2.  Card Memory game of important vocabulary words Center will need 2-3 sets of cards available for students

3.  Make a timeline using important dates during the civil war.  Center will need large sheets of construction paper, Civil War Timeline Worksheet, glue or glues sticks, scissors, and crayons or markers

4.  Color a map of United States during the Civil War depicting North and South, using a blank map sheet and a list of states in the Union and Confederacy.  Center will need A Divided Nation worksheet, blank U.S. maps, and crayons

5.  Complete a worksheet using math problems to label correct facts during the civil war.  Center will need calculators and the Civil War Math Facts worksheets
