Classroom Management Philosophy
My approach to classroom management is based on the understanding that a well-managed classroom promotes a safe learning environment, enhances student achievement, and produces capable citizens. My own classroom management philosophy addresses five key principles:
Respect and Dignity – Classroom management plans should always promote mutual respect and personal dignity. Student behaviors should reflect respect for one another, for the teacher and other school staff, and for the school environment. Discipline and reinforcement procedures should be administered in a way to enhance self-esteem and should not threaten the dignity of a student.
Positive Learning Environment – a classroom should be managed in such a way that it is conductive to learning. Students should feel safe and valued in the classroom environment. Daily procedures and behavior management techniques should be arranged to maximize learning potential and minimize distractions.
Self-Discipline – Students should be guided to self-regulate their behavior. Decision-making and motivation should be an internal process, rather than guided by external mandates or rewards. Teachers should strive to help students make responsible behavior choices and take pride in their positive actions.
Citizenship – The classroom should be a model of citizenship. Through managing their behavior and functioning in a group setting students can become productive citizens of a democratic society.
Organization – the teacher should model positive organizational skills to students through classroom procedures, room set-up, and behavioral techniques. An organized classroom environment is conducive to higher achievement and helps students feel prepared
